This program runs in collaboration with Rockford Art Museum and the Discovery Center Museum. Application forms are distributed to all third through fifth grade teachers in RPS District 205, allowing the most disadvantaged children in the district a chance to attend a summer camp at no cost. The camp runs for one week during the month of July, and focuses on art, dance and science and concludes with a performance on the last day of camp.
We're bringing out the artist in the child through exploratory and self expressive activities in dance, music and visual arts. Designed to foster an understanding of the performing and visual arts and their relationship with academic skills, this is a student and teacher favorite. Students engage in three hands-on learning experiences that tie in elements of composition, story building and fact vs. opinion to create works through fundamental activities. The artists then elicit verbal and written responses through questions and answer periods and a brief questionnaire. Held on Friday mornings for groups of 75-100 students at a cost of $9/student. To schedule a classroom field trip for Fine Arts Friday, call 815-965-0049 or visit online at www.rockfordsymphony.com.

As a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts we were able to spearhead the inaugural operation of RALLY in collaboration with the Rockford Symphony and Rockford Art Museum. Endorsed by the Rockford School District 205, this vital program met literacy based state goals through the teachings of one of three artists who introduced their discipline. These classroom sessions implemented cross-curricular vocabulary and questioning strategies respective to the district's reading curriculum goals. These visits were then followed up with class field trips to the Riverfront Museum Park where students engaged in dance, music and visual art lessons, further imprinting their learning through hands on experiences.
Pre and post vocabulary testing and extended response questionnaires indicated convincing results that this program was successful. Students were not only exposed to the fine arts but were affectively improving their cognizance of the various art forms and the vocabulary of the third grade language arts curriculum.
