Artistic Director:

The Rockford Dance Company seeks an ARTISTIC DIRECTOR with energy and vision; trained in classical ballet but passionately in love with all dance styles, eager to become the ambassador for dance in the community, committed to developing new audiences and new dancers, unafraid to meet the challenges facing arts companies in the 21st century; someone who dreams of reawakening in the community the love of dance.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience working in the performing arts (5-10 years preferred), with a strong emphasis in ballet, a complementary background in dance education, and experience working in the nonprofit sector. Success in working with, teaching and inspiring youth is critical. He/she should have thorough knowledge and experience in developing and staging full length ballets and repertoire dance performances. Strong communication and written skills are necessary.

The Artistic Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction in shaping the artistic goals, choreography and future direction of the Company and School. He/she works in partnership with the Executive Director to develop budgets and execute the Company’s programs, and advises the Board of Directors in developing policies and practices needed to achieve the Company’s mission.

The Rockford Dance Company, a 501(c)(3) corporation, is committed to excellence in the art of dance through performance, education and outreach. With an annual budget of approximately $400,000, RDC is entering its 39th season as the principal dance training and performance institution serving the greater Rockford area (Rockford is Illinois’ third largest city, located 75 miles northwest of Chicago). RDC presents four productions yearly: the Young Choreographer’s Concert, The Nutcracker (with live orchestra), a Children’s Dance Theater production (designed for families with young children) and a Spring Production. RDC is a founding member of the Riverfront Museum Park, home to its offices and five state-of-the-art studios, and is a Resident Company of the Coronado Theatre. Two hundred fifty students study dance at its school, managed by a School Director. RDC maintains a vibrant outreach division that serves 4,000 participants in a number of different formats.

School Director:

JOB TITLE: School Director

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS

College degree in arts administration, dance education or fine arts preferred. Minimum 5 years experience teaching all levels of ballet and/or modern dance, performance experience a plus but not necessary, knowledge and expertise in ballet pedagogy and dance education, ability to administer a year-round dance program from pre-school through adults, excellent communication skills, and a working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The school director should be self motivated and proactive, have a history of working within an educational/professional school setting. He/She should be a problem solver, and have a strong background in Classical and modern dance, dance pedagogy and work as a team player within the Rockford Dance Company.

JOB SUMMARY

The school director is responsible for the operation, development and administration of the school of the Rockford Dance Company and its satellite programs. Accountable to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Artistic Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Coordinate communication between Rockford Dance Company School, RDC faculty, students and parents.
2. Hire, supervise and evaluate quality teachers and guest teachers capable of teaching the class syllabus to RDC standards.
3. Consult, as needed, with Artistic Director concerning instruction and placement relative to RDC School.
4. Be available to students and/or parents for consultation regarding school programming and class placement.
5. Assist the Executive Director in the development and maintenance of long-term planning of programs and budgets plans for the RDC School and its satellite programs.
6. Implement and administer artistic direction of the school in keeping with the School of Rockford Dance Company’s syllabus.
7. Implements and administers RDC School policies and procedures.
8. Teach a minimum of 5 hours of dance classes per semester.
9. Organize and oversee class schedules to accommodate students, teachers, class space and community needs.
10. Produce, create and manage the school production.
11. Conduct DanceReach programming, budgets and personnel from workshop to performance.
12. Work closely with Executive Director or Marketing Director to create and disseminate RDC School information.
13. Coordinate and collaborate with the Artistic Director in organizing RDC Scholarship program and scholarship auditions.
14. Develops and implements new outreach programming in a supervisory capacity with the Outreach Coordinator.
15. Serve as an RDC ambassador for purposes of fundraising, solicitations, interviews, and community events.
16. Comply with RDC’s Conflict of Interest policy and Employee Manual.
17. Report monthly to the Board of Directors and attend regularly scheduled Board meetings when possible.
18. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibility for managing the role and evaluating the performance of the School Registrar, the Dancewear Shoppe Manager, the School teachers, outreach coordinator and the School interns.
